Swim with the famous Akumal turtles as you explore the warm and shallow underwater world of Turtle Bay at Akumal on a leisurely guided snorkel tour in search of 3 of the world’s 7 sea turtle species in our Turtles & Cenotes Tour. Then it’s off to a magical secret cenote near Akumal to swim in the limestone caverns of this ancient underground river system.
Turtle sightings are guaranteed as there is no best season to see the Akumal turtles, because they can be found in the shallow waters of the bay all year round.

Commonly referred to as “Turtle Bay Mexico” Akumal has an abundance of turtles. You may be wondering “why are there so many turtles in Akumal”. Firstly Akumal has an abundance of sea grass which attracts a large number of green and loggerhead turtles who come to feed. Secondly the area is a popular nesting site for a number of turtle species. The nesting season runs between May and September when large numbers of turtles climb the sands of Akumal beach to lay eggs.
After the turtle snorkeling portion of the tour is over it is time to head into the jungle for the cenote tour. We will journey deep into the subtropical rainforest of the Yucatan to relax, swim, and snorkel in the crystal clear fresh waters of a massive “cenote”. Swim in the pristine waters and marvel at the ancient stalagmites and exotic wildlife that surround you.
Swimming with sea turtles in Akumal – After we pick you up at your hotel we will head to Akumal beach in search of the famous sea turtles. We will approach the Akumal bay in full snorkeling gear after a detailed safety briefing ready to go into the water. Once in the water we will swim out from Akumal beach in search of the beautiful turtles. We will remain in the water for approximately one hour. Every day we get the chance to see around 3 different species of sea turtles, these are close encouters and really are something special.
What animals will I see at Akumal beach? Apart from the Akumal turtles you have a good chance of seeing beauitful spotted eagle rays, stings rays, barracuda, grouper, reef fish, and coral gardens. One group actually saw a small pod of dolphins underwater inside Akumal beach.
Cenotes near Akumal – The next adventure is situated into the subtropical rainforest. Explore the unforgettable world of the underground river system and “cenotes”. Take an easy, guided walk through huge caverns and observe natural history dating back millions of years. Swim in the crystal clear blue waters of these unique limestone pools and relax amongst the thousands of white stalactites and stalagmites that surround you at every turn.
Professional guides – Our professional guides will make sure you feel safe and ensure you have a truly fascinating experience. Even if you are not such an experienced snorkeler or if you are not so comfortable swimming the guide will be there every step of the way even holding your hand if needed. Our guides will make sure you have a safe and memorable experience swimming with turtles in Akumal and exploring ancient cenotes.
Professional photos – Throughout the day our guides will take lots of photos of you swimming with the Akumal turtles and exploring the magical cenotes. If you like you can purchase a usb drive with your personalized images.
High quality gear – Full snorkeling gear will be provided, you can use wet suits at the cenotes. The gear is disinfected and washed carefully every day.
Snack at the Cenote – After the cenote snorkeling activity, we will have a small snack-style buffet that includes: Fruits, empanadas, cereal bar, water, and refreshments.
Private tours: If you would like a private tour of Akumal and the surrounding cenotes we are more than happy to assist you. The group size for private tours is between 10 to 12 customers maximum, which helps us to provide a customized experience.
The nature reserve fee of 10 USD per person is not included in the price.
- 6:00 AM: Pick up at any location in the Riviera Maya. Pick up time: 9:00am Tulum, 7:30am Playa Del Carmen, and 6:00am Cancun.
- 9:15 – 10:15 am: Snorkeling in Akumal bay
- 10:30 am: Departure from Akumal to the cenotes.
- 10:50 am: Arrival to the cenotes.
- 11:00 – 11:45 pm: Swim in the cenote.
- 12:00 pm: Lunch buffet at cenotes.
- 12:30 – 1:15 pm: Guided walk through huge caverns.
- 1:30 pm: Transportation back to the Hotels.
